Rememberance by Mike Shuman
May 2005

I got this story from Lucien "Mike" Michael while driving him across country to live with his son Dave in Oregon.

Roy had become fast friends with Dave's parents (Betty and Mike) since high school and beyond. In 1981 he and the Michaels went to Mardis Gras. On the way back they were involved in a horrible accident. Betty was sleeping in a bed behind the driver's seat of the camper. Roy was driving and Mike was riding shotgun. There was an accident on the right side of the freeway and Roy and Mike were looking at that. Roy drifted left without seeing that there was a flatbed semi parked on the left berm. They hit it and sheared the camper in half lengthwise. Roy and Betty were killed instantly. Mike's half of the van flew over the side of the mountain and miraculously he crawled out of it with only a few scratches.

In his love and admiration for his friend, Dave Michael named his second son Roy.

Roy is no longer with us. He can't update him own page so if you have other memories or recollections about him that you wish to share, please email them to
