John A. Mensch passed away July 18, 2007 at age 92.
The son of the late Rev. John A. L. Mensch and Nellie Ann (Shearer) Mensch, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Velma M. (Peterson); sisters, Alice (Harsh, Vandergrift), Mary (Oswalt); and brother, Henry.
He is survived by his second wife, Marion (Reynolds) Mensch; brother, Dr. George Mensch; daughter, Judith Overholt; sons John, Donald, and Robert; nine grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
John graduated from Mt. Union College (B.A.) and Kent State Univ. (Masters). He studied for his PhD. at Kent State Univ., Univ. of Pittsburg, Ohio State Univ. and Akron Univ. His educational career of over 30 years included: Superintendent at Smith Township, Windham and Fairless School Districts and school teacher and principal at Tallmadge High School. John wrote and introduced the Occupational Work Adjustment Program (OWA) for Ohio schools. He retired from Tallmadge High School in 1977. A supporter of high school athletics, he was a high school coach, served on the N.E. Ohio District Athletic Board, Ohio State Athletic Board of Control as well as Commissioner of the Portage County and Metro leagues. He wrote and published a book titled Mediocrity in Public Education.
John served in the U.S. Navy Amphibious Force during World War II in the Atlantic & Pacific theaters. He belonged to the American Legion and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge at Garrettsville, Ohio. Favorite pastime was on the golf course with many wonderfulderful friends. Interment will be at Northlawn Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 281. Donations may, be given to the St. Luke's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
